Competition to create the artist label and wrapping paper for the 40th vintage of Chianti Classico “Casanuova di Nittardi”, Vigna Doghessa, 2020.
Nittardi is a historic Chianti Classico estate with 40 hectares of vineyards located between Castellina in Chianti and Maremma in Tuscany. In the 16th century the winery was owned by Michelangelo Buonarroti. The artistic vocation is in the winery’s DNA, as shown by the large sculpture park around the Main house and the exceptional line-up of artists who have created two works dedicated to the Chianti Classico Casanuova di Nittardi, Vigna Doghessa, every year since 1981 following the invitation of the winery’s owners Peter Femfert (gallery owner), his wife Stefania Canali (historian) and their eldest son Léon, who has been running the Nittardi since 2013.
For the first 39 vintages of the Chianti Classico Casanuova di Nittardi the artworks were created by established and internationally renowned artists such as Yoko Ono, Friedensreich Hundertwasser, Günter Grass, Dario Fo, Corneille, Pierre Alechinsky, Mimmo Paladino or Mikis Theodorakis.
For the 40th vintage of “Casanuova di Nittardi”, Nittardi has decided to organize a competition in which six artists will be selected to create an artist’s label and the corresponding wrapping paper for the bottles of the new 2020 vintage.
Nittardi wants to celebrate the fortieth anniversary not by looking back, but by looking forward and allowing also emerging artists from all continents to participate.
Each participant must submit one work as a template for the label (size 30 cm high x 39 cm wide or 40 cm x 52 cm or 50 cm x 65 cm) and one work as a template for the tissue paper (size 40 cm high x 57 cm wide or 50 cm x 71 cm or 60 cm x 85 cm) with which the bottle will be wrapped.
Motif and artistic technique (oil or acrylic on canvas, pastel, gouache, collage, coloured pencil or watercolour on cardboard, photography or other technique) are up to the artist.
After a preliminary selection to check whether the submitted proposals comply with the conditions and principles of the competition, the 6 winners of the competition will be selected by a jury.
This jury is composed among others by a museum director, a gallery owner, an artist and an art critic.
Each carton of Casanuova di Nittardi 2020 will contain six different bottles, each with a label and tissue paper designed by one of the different winning artists.
Each selected artist will not only receive excellent visibility (PR) through the notoriety this art project has enjoyed for four decades, but will also win a week of free accommodation at the Nittardi winery for two people in autumn 2022 or spring 2023 and 24 bottles of Chianti Classico Casanuova di Nittardi 2020.
In addition, the artwork of the 6 winners will be exhibited in Florence in autumn 2022 and in DIE GALERIE in Frankfurt am Main (Germany) in 2023 together with all originals for the previous 39 vintages.
